Drinking water-related illnesses are estimated to cause around 500,000 doctor visits and 1,000 deaths per year in the US.
There are a wide variety of contaminants that may be found in drinking water in the US, including:

Microorganisms – bacteria, viruses, and protozoa that can cause diseases like cholera, typhoid fever, and cryptosporidiosis
Disinfectants and Disinfection Byproducts – chlorine, chloramines, trihalomethanes (THMs), and haloacetic acids (HAAs) that can be produced by water treatment processes and may cause health problems over time
Inorganic Chemicals – arsenic, fluoride, lead, and nitrates that can occur naturally or be introduced through human activities and can cause a range of health problems
Organic Chemicals – benzene, perchloroethylene (PCE), and dioxins that can be produced by industrial processes and can cause cancer and other health problems
Radionuclides – radium and uranium that may occur naturally in groundwater and can increase the risk of cancer
Microplastics – tiny plastic particles that can be ingested, and their effect on human health is still being studied.

It is important to note that the type and level of contaminants in drinking water can vary widely depending on where you live, water runoff, agriculture in the area, and your type of system.

Testing your water can help you identify any contaminants or pollutants that may be present in it, and determine if any treatment is necessary to remove these contaminants. If you are concerned about the quality of your drinking water, especially if you notice any changes in its taste or smell, or if someone in your household has a weakened immune system, it’s a good idea to get your water tested.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established water quality standards and provides guidance to help consumers understand and interpret water test results.
